Yokomine-ji, a Shingon Buddhist temple nestled in the forests of Mount Ishizuchi, is one of five temples in Saijo City that belong to the Shikoku Pilgrimage, which encompasses 88 temples that span all of Shikoku. Sitting at an elevation of 740 meters, Yokomine-ji is the third highest temple on the pilgrimage, and the roughly 2 hour trek to the main temple takes you through winding forest trails, across brooks, and up rocky slopes. While a bus stop is available a few minutes away from the main temple, the picturesque views along the trail are not to be missed, with sunny days bringing warm, homely vibes to the trail and rainy days bringing an air of mystery and solemn quiet.

A path on a path. This miniature person and their little home was created on a moss covered rock, on the path to the temple.

It doesn’t get better than being surrounded by trees on every side and as far as the eye can see.

All it took was a shift in footing and perception to light up these woods.
